Mushrooms

One of our favorite foods happens to be a fungi — mushroom fungi that is! But please don’t confuse them with slime molds, rusts and yeasts that are also a part of the fungi family. There are an amazing variety of mushrooms eaten throughout the world, (2000 plus!) but the White Button mushroom is the most common. Mushrooms have interesting names like Chanterelles, Crimini, and King Oyster.

We love eating and cooking with mushrooms because they have an earthy flavor that compliments many other ingredients. Unfortunately, there are many varieties of mushrooms that are poisonous, so be careful! Recently we were hiking and came across a beautiful tree log with mushrooms growing all over it; we looked but didn’t touch! Always be on the safe side and buy mushrooms from your local farmers market or grocery store.

We have a Christmas wish list and the Black Truffle Mushroom is on it. It’s very expensive but very flavorful! Does Santa deliver produce? We don’t think so but we can always hope… So don’t be afraid, bring out your Grandma’s cream of mushroom soup recipe or simply saute some mushrooms as a side dish. We love to eat and cook with the amazing fungi called the mushroom and hope you will too!
