Strawberries

We found out that strawberries have a museum dedicated to them in Belgium. We think there should be a strawberry museum in California, they produce 80% of the strawberries this nation eats. Strawberries belong to the rose family and we think they are just as beautiful as any rose we have ever seen. They are so delicious and its amazing how healthy they are to eat. Strawberries were even used as a medicinal herb in the 13th Century in Rome.

Lucky for all of us that it is pretty easy to grow strawberries in our home gardens and containers. Pick the sunniest spot in your yard and they love well drained soil. Strawberries really like long warm days and cool nights. Who doesn’t, right! Seems strawberries are on a permanant vacation. Packed with nutrients, and tasty, they really are a perfect fruit. Makes us think of fresh cut strawberries and homemade pound cake, yes with fresh whipped cream on the top.

That brings us to the picking directions. Pinch the stem of the berry between the thumb and forefinger when your picking. This will prevent bruising the fruit and protect the plant. Pick berries that are firm and fully ripe. They do not ripen once you pick them and we are pretty sure they wouldn’t be good cooked like a fried green tomato. Do not wash or pick off the stem until you are ready to eat them. Make sure you store them in the refrigerator. Really, there is nothing like stopping at a road side stand and buying your berries that have been picked that day, except for walking out to your yard and picking them yourself.

Try our Citrus Berry Parfait recipe with fresh strawberries instead of frozen berries and let us know how your strawberry patch is growing.
