Tomatoes
We can’t really tell you if the tomato is a fruit or a vegetable. In our research we found that it is one or the other or both. It seems that there has been a very long debate on this subject which went all the way to the supreme court. All we know is that tomatoes are one of the tastiest foods that we eat and grow in our garden. It is a sprawling plant that is in the nightshade family. Tomatoes are a sun loving plant that needs well drained soil. In fact tomatoes are the #1 plant chosen to grow in gardens today. It is a perennial that is grown out doors in temperate climates as an annual. It also is well liked and popular with kids, tomato sauce on pizza sounds familiar! Just one tomato plant can produce 15 tomatoes per season. Our favorite variety is the heirloom tomato.
The tomato was once considered to be poisonous, lucky for all of us this myth was busted! Tomatoes are very nutritious and there are so many varieties and ways to eat them. Tomatoes are particularly high in vitamin C and A. Tomatoes are best kept at room temperature, if kept in the refrigerator they lose flavor. Tomatoes are made into paste, tomato sauce, sun dried tomatoes, canned tomatoes, tomato juice, and so many other endless ways!
If we left you wondering what the answer is fruit or veggie, technically the tomato is the fruit of the tomato plant, which can also be used as a vegetable in cooking. Now does it really matter, we love tomatoes and we hope you do too!
