Greenstring Farm Fall Festival
Soaking up the goodness of fall at the Greenstring Farm Fall Squash Festival. Greenstring Farm is a 140 acre farm in Petaluma California. They farm sustainably and naturally we think that means they care about future generations having healthy food and a healthy planet. Their main focus is to grow food for people while improving the land at the same time. We can really learn a lot from the hard working people at Greenstring farms. Like their sign says “Beyond Sustainable”.
The Fall Squash Festival was so fun there were cooking demonstrations and an opportunity to taste yummy recipes. Recipes like winter squash stew and roasted winter squash salad. Greenstring grows so many different types of squash that we have never seen before like Kuri, Kabocha, and Pink Banana Squash. We grew squash in our home garden this year, but they inspired us to try many different varieties next year! We even got to look through a microscope at compost! All this inside a beautiful big barn with a live band. Greenstring Institute even has an internship program to teach their method of farming to others.
There are probably some local farms where you live that would be fun to visit. They often have activities like farm tours, festivals, farm stands, and sometimes they let you pick your own produce from the field. Learning about where your food comes from can inspire you to try new fruits and veggies you have never tried. Let us know what activities your local farms offer. Share with us what unusual veggie you tried!
