Pick Your Own
We had so much fun picking blackberries at our good friend Angela’s family ranch. Eating some, picking some, there is nothing like tasting a berry right off of the bush. Picking your own fruits and vegetables can be so cool when you realize your food doesn’t always have to come off of a truck. You can learn how things grow and how much better they can taste when they are picked ripe. Depending on where you live, the end of summer can offer endless possibilities for growing, picking, buying and tasting the best fruits and vegetables.
We have just started picking vine ripe tomatoes from our own garden. They taste so different than the tomatoes we buy at our local market, they are much sweeter and have more flavor. We watch and wait for everything to grow; the hardest part is being patient. We have learned the hard way about picking too early.
If you can’t grow your own garden picking at a local farm can be the next best thing. There are sometimes festivals and events around the harvest of fruits and vegetables in season. So check it out, and look up local farms that offer pick your own programs and spend the afternoon learning about where food comes from. Pick your own is really learning about farm to table, from your local farm to your table.
