Fall Picnic

A bale of hay makes a beautiful table, and is very easy to set. So pack up the kids and head out for a fall picnic. We usually think of taking the kids on picnics in the spring and summer. As the leaves start to change and kids have settled into the routine of school again we slowly begin to spend less time outside.

It just so happens that this is the perfect time of year to head to your local pumpkin patch with your picnic basket. You can almost always find a free bale of hay to saddle up to. Our family trip to the pumpkin patch has been one of our favorite outings since the kids were very little. Unfortunetly a trip to the pumpkin patch can be very costly. They offer food, and fun treats for the kids along with purchasing your pumpkins for halloween. The only down side is the price of some of these items. Don’t let this keep you from going and taking those yearly priceless photos. The kids exploring the corn mazes and tractor rides outweigh the cost especially if you fill your picnic basket at home. Fill it with tasty goodies like a thermos of soup, hot chocolate, sandwiches, and don’t forget a tasty homemade treat.

Even if you don’t have the time or inclination to make the food at home visit your local deli and pick a few seasonal items. You will still save money, have your basket waiting in the car and your off for a great afternoon of fun with the kids. Check out our fall picnic recipes like Rustic Tomato Soup, Spinach Salad, Hot Cocoa, and Blonde Brownies.
