Kids tools. Grown up style.

What that means is that we don’t have to run out and purchase a bunch of kid’s kitchen gear. What a relief! I don’t know about you but we don’t have enough space in our kitchen already. Kids love to use our grown up utensils anyway! It’s great if they are fun colors and you have measuring cups and spoons that are easy to read. Plastic or wood utensils are preferable when teaching kids to cook, but we all probably have one or two plastic spoons lying around. Utensils and cutting boards that are dishwasher safe are a smart choice, since we know they will get cleaned properly. Measuring ingredients before you start can also be helpful for cooking with kids. What is most important is kitchen safety when cooking with kids. Never leave a kid unattended in the kitchen, never ever!!

Kids tools worth having

Egg Slicer (cuts hard boiled eggs, mushrooms, soft cheeses, strawberries etc.)
Pizza Wheel (cuts tortillas, soft sliced bread, soft veggies etc.)
Scissors (cuts herbs, lettuce, pizza, veggies etc.)
Zester
Grater
Plastic Cutting Board
Plastic and Wooden Utensils
Measuring cups and spoons (easy to read)
Kitchen Timer (timer kids can use easily)
Sturdy Step Stool (only use stools that are sturdy and cannot tip over)

Kid Gear to consider

Kid Size Apron or Chef Coat (makes it a little safer if something spills on them)
Kid Size Oven Mitts (sometimes hard to find but worth the search to protect their hands)

Older kids can start to incorporate knives, then slowly introduce cooking on the stove top. Only with strict supervision! Then continue to progress to the oven and so forth. It’s all about paying attention to their age stage and skill level. Remember teaching a kid to cook is suppose to be fun, otherwise they will not enjoy themselves and neither will you! Having kids help in the kitchen can take extra time at first but boy is it a time saver after they have learned a few ways to help out! They really do appreciate their culinary grown up helper!
