Olive Press

We had a chance to stop by the Olive Press in Sonoma; what a culinary adventure we had! We met a woman who knew just about everything there is to know about olive oil and she explained so much to us!

She showed us how to take a drizzle of oil in a tiny cup and heat it between our hands. It brings out the flavors in the olive oil. Then we took two big sniffs of the oil, we could actually almost taste it with our sense of smell. It was amazing! Then we let it drizzle down our throat and took two puffs of air through our mouth. We could then taste how different each olive oil really was. Like flavors of candy only even more delicious.

Olive oils all taste very different and each one has a unique flavor. My favorite was lime, and Lilly’s was the freshly pressed all natural oil. Some are smooth and buttery and some are more peppery because they are more recently pressed. One thing I especially love about olive oil is that it’s so versatile! From vinaigrettes to olive oil cakes, it’s an easy ingredient that adds a ton of flavor.

We have heard the term EVOO mentioned on our favorite food shows, but at the Olive Press we finally learned what it really means. The letters stand for “Extra Virgin Olive Oil” and they mean that the oil was extracted from the olives mechanically, without the use of excessive heat or any additives or solvents. We think it can also just mean extra fresh and delicious!!

It’s a good thing there are entire books devoted to this special oil, because our culinary adventure has only made us more interested in using and learning as much about olive oils as we can. If you want to learn more too, check out the Olive Press and maybe some day you can visit and do your own tasting as well — see if you like the lime flavor as much as we did!
